Some Observations Pertinent to the Theory of Radar Scattering by Clouds

Various aspects of the theory of radar scattering by clouds are delineated. It is demonstrated that various ways of viewing single scattering by particle aggregates (i.e. summation, Siegert-Goldstein, turbulent scatter) are in fact theoretically equivalent. Other topics discussed are: effects of receiver bandwidth, some points about the statistics of particle scattering, and a theory advanced by D. Atlas to explain discrepancies of 8-10 db between theoretical and observed cloud echo intensities. (Author)
