A Preliminary Investigation of Safety and Arming Devices for Low Velocity Projectiles

The basic principles of several mechanisms for use as safety and arming devices for low velocity projectiles are discussed. Specific emphasis is placed on the need for a mechanism to be capable of distinguishing between the acceleration-time histories caused by the mortar firing of a projectile and those resulting from the accidental impact of the projectile due to delivery by a malfunctioning parachute. Existing and suggested devices, which are supposed to measure a crucial velocity change, are categorized and examined. Preliminary recommendations concerning the most promising approaches are given.
