Two machine programs were developed for use in computing microscopic and macroscopic cross sections for light scattering and absorption by spherical-homogeneous aerosol particles with a complex index of refraction. The first of these programs computes microscopic cross section data by use of the Mie theory. The second program integrates the microscopic cross section data over aerosol particle size distributions to produce macroscopic cross section data. These codes were written in ALGOL for the Burroughs B-5500 computer and in FORTRAN-IV for other computers. Calculations obtained from these codes were compared with data reported by other investigators in order to verify their accuracy. A sizable quantity of aerosol cross section data was generated for several aerosol particle size distributions and the results are presented. In addition, a description of the calculational methods and instructions for utilization of the two codes on the B-5500 computer are given to aid those who wish to utilize the codes. (Author)
