In the simulation of hydrofoil craft, performance tests are required to ascertain that the simulated vehicle exhibits the same characteristics as the operational vehicle. This report discusses the particular static and dynamic characteristics which can be considered to define hydrofoil craft. Definitive characteristics of realistic seas are also given. Tolerances for differences between full scale and simulated characteristics are proposed which are consistent with the current state-of-the-art of hydrofoils. Available definitive characteristics of PC(H)-1, HIGH POINT, are included and simulated characteristics of the vessel are shown to demonstrate the degree of correlation which has been achieved for this vessel. In general, the simulation can correctly reproduce any known full-scale static characteristic. However, correlation between simulated and actual dynamic characteristics is not completely satisfactory. It is suspected that this shortcoming stems from a less-than-satisfactory level of full-scale static data accuracy. For simulation purposes collection and interpretation of significant quantities of full-scale test data offers the most direct route to improved correlation. Other improvements are to be expected from refinements in automatic statistical analysis techniques.
