The various types of electronically-controlled phase shifters are discussed in generalities as to the method of effecting phase shift. Then consideration is given to how the intrinsic parameters of phase shifters affect the factors which will later serve as the tools for selection of one type over another type for a particular system application. For example, the pin diode parameters are discussed in terms of their effect on the insertion loss, bandwidth, etc. Finally, the various phase shifters are compared on a state-of-the-art basis, and comments of the most likely to succeed are stated. The state-of-the-art of the investigated devices is rapidly changing. That is, the state-of-the-art today may well be obsolete tomorrow. This is a relatively new field of electronics, and many technological advances can be expected. On this basis, a constant surveillance of phase shifter advancements is necessary. (Author)
