Research Program to Determine Fatigue Properties of Wire Rope Having Individually Coated Wires

The problem of evaluating the fatigue life of wire rope under severe loading conditions is studied. A fatigue machine is proposed which allows similar load and flexure for all elements of the wire rope within the test section of the rope. The dimensionless ratio which describes the load condition for wire rope is set to the high value experienced in arresting gear applications for wire rope. The proposed machine is then fabricated. Using the new machine, accelerated tests on wire rope fabricated by new techniques, or with lubricants and/or coatings are possible. (Author)
