A Review of Flow Noise Research Related to the Sonar Self Noise Problem

This report is a review of the literature concerning the excitation of structures by random pressure fluctuations in a turbulent boundary layer and the consequent acoustic radiation. Such radiation is termed flow noise. The purpose of the report is to determine those aspects of analysis and experiment on the subject that are pertinent to the generation of self noise in a sonar. The report is concerned with the physical mechanisms governing flow noise, with the prediction of the magnitude and distribution in frequency of flow noise, and with the discovery of measures that may be taken to reduce its influence upon sonar self noise. The outstanding research problems remaining in the field are pointed out, and recommendations are made for the direction of further research. (Author)
