A Study of Swelling of Typical Elastomers in Dilatometer Fluids

The research was undertaken to establish the extent of swelling of some typical cross-linked rubbers in dialtometer fluids. It was also desired to determine if aqueous uptake by these rubbers was mere filling of the volumes occupied by the voids in these elastomers or slow swelling. The elastomers which were used were natural rubber, synthetic cis-1,4- polyisoprene, polyether polyurethane and polystyrene-butadiene. The liquids were benzene, water, and lithium chloride solution.
