Unresolved Problems in Brittle Material Design: A Critical Literature Review

摘要

Extensive benefits are to be derived from the employment of certain non-metallic refractory materials in structural applications, particularly where severe operating temperatures are involved. These materials, however, lack ductility and are susceptible to flaws, so that conventional design procedures cannot be used with confidence that a reliable structure will result. In view of the interest in the use of these materials the Panel has therefore embarked upon a programme to appropriately refine design procedures and techniques, and to present the resulting material in a form convenient for use by designers. This critical literature review is an early result of this programme. (Author)
