ANALYSIS FOR ACYL COMPONENTS OF NEOPENTYL POLYOL ESTER LUBRICANTS

Methods of gas chromatography have been applied to the analysis of acyl components in commercial neopentyl esters and in lubricant formulations derived from such esters. Analysis of the free acids produced by hydrolysis of the samples revealed that the ester lubricants were derived from normal acids ranging from C5 to C10;isovaleric acid was present in a few samples. Average acid chain length varied from 5.1 to 7.5. From 20 to 83% of the acyl groups found in the lubricant formulations were from n-valeric acid. All results were in good agreement with previous results obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
