Elements of Instrumentation. Electric Modifiers (Electric Information Processing Elements)

An attempt to organize the entire field of Instrumentation on the basis of the 'Elements' (Instrumentation Elements) from which instrument systems are composed. Instrumentation is concerned with the acquisition and processing of information. Information in instrumentation systems is carried by Signals. An Instrumentation Element is a modular unit which performs one particular task or which solves one particular problem. Two kinds of Elements do exist, Transducers (e.g., a strain gauge, or a photoelectric cell) and Modifiers (e.g., an amplifier, an integrator, or a filter). The concept of Instrumentation Elements comprises the entire field of instrumentation, i.e., mechanical, thermal, magnetic, electric, radiation, and molecular (chemical) instrumentation. (Author)
