Production Facilities for Multi-Turn Metal-Film Trimmer Resistors Per Signal Corps Technical Requirement Scs-127 Dated 9 February, 1962 and MIL-R-22097b (Modified)
The development of production facilities for the trimmer revealed unanticipated shortcomings in the film characteristics. A chemically deposited nickel film was found to be inherently better than an evaporated nickel-chromium film. Neither was found to approach the more demanding requirements of trimmer applications as compared to fixed resistor requirements. An extensive program designed to exploit the inherently better chemically deposited nickel failed to show correlations required to develop the film characteristics necessary for trimmer application. The need for additional fundamental research is evident. Production facilities were developed and it was demonstrated that these facilities could produce if it had been possible to control adequately the metallizing and heat treating of the film. These facilities offered the advantage of immediate scale-up in production via multiplicity. (Author)
