The design and development of a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter suitable for use in fluid-state digital control systems are described. Design considerations are discussed, and theoretical static and dynamic analyses are presented. Experimental static and dynamic test results are also included. The design of input data handling techniques suitable for fluidstate digital control systems is described. These techniques include a counter preset device for applying step inputs and a synchronizer necessary when applying ramp inputs. Models of both devices performed satisfactorily. The D/A converter and input data handling devices were combined with an existing quantizer, bidirectional counter, preamplifier, power amplifier, and prime mover to form a prototype digital pulse-data control system. An analysis of the effect of system parameters on performance is presented. Experimental test results are also included. A relatively simple digital lead compensation scheme was implemented. Experimental test results showed that this type of compensation can be used effectively to stabilize fluid-state digital control systems. (Author)
