Study of an Inverse-Pinch Electric Discharge Sound Source.

摘要

The electric discharge produced in water by an axisymmetric inverse-pinch electrode geometry was investigated as a sound source. Unlike an ordinary spark discharge sound source, the plasma produced by the inverse-pinch sound source is acted upon by a self-induced magnetic force which is always directed radially outward with respect to the axis of symmetry. Experimentally it was observed that at each capacitively stored energy level there exists a particular electrode spacing for which the magnitude of the peak pressure radiated will be a maximum. Whenever these latter conditions existed, the electric current was found to be a critically-damped discharge. A peak pressure of 206 psi was measured 1 yard from the source in water of zero salinity with 1920 joules of electric energy. (Author)
