Studies on Gastric Radiation Injury: Differential Effects on Acid Secretion and Bioelectrical Activity

In isolated preparations, mucosal acid was secreted with counterpart serosal base independently of electrogenic activity. Irradiation had no effect directly on the electrogenic mechanism between 135 rad and 11 k rad, although abscopal effects showing dose dependence and RBE changes had been previously established 7 days after 560 rad. In the otherwise intact animals acid secretion was not inhibited immediately after doses of approximately 900 rad. In the animal, also, bioelectric inhibition depended on intact vagal innervation, as did the tonic maintenance of high rates of acid secretion. Autonomic control factors seemed to dominate any primary irradiation effect, and possible direct radiation injury appeared to be offset by subcellular repair processes. (Author)
