DEVELOPMENT OF AN ORALLY EFFECTIVE INSECT REPELLENT

The benzamide derivatives were potent repellents when applied locally or mixed with blood for in vitro testing. However, when injected intraperitoneally in sublethal doses, no protection against mosquito biting was demonstrated. From the study of the distribution of radioactive diethyltoluamide in mice, it is obvious that the compound is very rapidly excreted from the body.nFurther work on benzamide derivatives will be continued. In addition, several pyrethrine-like compounds will be tested since allethrine showed promising results in earlier work.
