Reversible galvanic cells employing zirconia - calcia, zirconia - magnesia or thoria - yttria solid electrolytes have been used to investigate the thermodynamic properties of palladium - copper and palladium - tin alloys. Measurements have been made over the entire ranges of composition at temperatures between 900 and 1200K. The e.m.f. data have been used to evaluate partial and integral free energies of formation and these have been combined with calorimetrically measured enthalpies in order to estimate the entropies of formation. The thermodynamic properties are discussed in relation to the electronic and structural characteristics of the phases; it is hypothesised that the thermodynamic properties of both systems are strongly influenced by effects arising from electron transfer.
