Collectively Compact Sets of Gradient Mappings

Properties of families of functionals whose gradients form collectively compact sets are studied and results are applied to the approximate minimization of functionals. It is shown that under certain conditions limits of points extremizing approximating functionals will extremize the limit functional. (Author)
