Waveform Analysis of Geographic Patterns Recorded on Visible and Infrared Imagery

The primary objectives of this study were: (1) the application and refinement of an electronic technique for scanning visible and infrared imagery; and (2) the development of a methodology which would discriminate between various terrain types recorded on such imagery. Two multispectral imagery sets were used, a panchromatic-thermal infrared set and three frames of a nine-lens multiband camera set. Video conversion techniques concerning consistent display, imagery orientation, and scan-line selection were developed and applied to all images. After the waveforms were reproduced on a sampling grid, waveform segments associated with specific terrain types were isolated and several statistical variables were calculated. Using combinations of these variables, it was possible to isolate and differentiate between the terrain types recorded. Additional testing removed several sources of statistical error, thereby improving the accuracy of the waveform measurement. (Author)
