Diffraction Theory of Lensless Correlation

The two-dimensional lensless correlator is discussed on the basis of a diffraction theory that appears to be applicable to arbitrary functions. The analysis shows that this analog computer facilitates a continuous tradeoff of the number of multiplications contributing to the summation approximating a given integral with the number of summations computed. Applications of the lensless correlator to data processing are discussed and its limitations are indicated. (Author)
