High Energy Electrochemical Couples. Ii. Gas Electrodes in Organic Solvents

The purpose of the work is to provide basic information on selected electrochemical couples which may be useful in the development of electrochemical energy storage systems suitable for vehicle propulsion. A literature survey was made on the cathodic oxygen electrode in non-aqueous solvents and revealed that, while very little work on this reaction has been done, there exists a reversible one-electron reduction of oxygen in several organic solvents. An attempt to purify the solvent by electrolysis was unsuccessful. A spinning band column was set up for fractional distillation. Electrochemical cells were designed and fabricated. (Author)
