The Lar Gibbon as Definitive and Intermediate Host of Taenia Solium

Man is generally considered to be the only definitive host for Taenia solium. The host-parasite relationship for the bladderworm stage is not as specific and several intermediate hosts are known. By chance, it was found that the white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar lar) would act as an intermediate host. Since previous studies have shown that this animal is susceptible to two parasites commonly considered as specific to man, P. falciparum (Ward et al., 1965, Science 150: 1604-1605), and Enterobius vermicularis (Sandosham, 1950, J. Helm. 24: 171-204), an attempt was made to produce the definitive stage of T. solium in the gibbon.
