The Design of Pumps for Use in an Active Anti-Roll System

The report discusses the types of pumps available for use in shipboard anti-roll tank systems. The technical and functional requirements of the system are presented in general terms and related to the characteristics of the pumps discussed. Interface problems in relation to pump type, prime movers, transmission system, etc., and overall ship system are discussed with regard to conventional ship designs. It was concluded that axial flow pumps generally provide the best solution to the pump selection problem while the power source or prime mover and transmission system selection are wholly dependent on the ship configuration, power plant, mission, etc. For each particular ship design a detailed study must be conducted in order to determine what constitutes the optimum active anti-roll tank system or if the system itself is justified. The report provides the background or a starting point for such a detailed study. (Author)
