摘要

The unfrozen water content of a soil can be determined by calculating the partial molar free energy of water (delta F bar, subscript l) at any temperature and referring this value to the plot of delta F bar, subscript l vs. the water content of the soil under consideration. A plot of delta F bar, subscript l vs. water content can be obtained from a moisture characteristic curve at room temperature. Methods of calculating the numerical values for the graphs are outlined. Data are given for granular, clay, loam, and peat soils and for Na-montmorillonite, so that the results should be useful in estimating unfrozen water by comparing an unknown soil with a similar soil in the report.
