The Effect of Rate of Gland Function on Parotid Fluid Uric Acid Levels

Paired parotid fluid samples were collected without exogenous stimulation and at 5 different gustation-induced rates of flow. Enzymatic uric acid analyses were carried out to ascertain which of the collection procedures was least susceptible to the effect of flow rate on uric acid concentration. The comparative value of the unstimulated sample has not been delineated in the present study, but the extremely high concentration of uric acid in this type of fluid is suggestive of glandular alteration and raises questions concerning the validity of its use.
