An investigation was initiated in order to answer critical questions concerning the chemical behavior of the STELLER chemiluminescent material pertinent to its use for night signalling and marking applications. STELLER is used in two-component chemiluminescent systems which emit light when the STELLER is mixed with the oxidizer (see AD-631 458). Performance modification to increase brightness at long durations was approached by controlling the rate of diffusion of the oxidizer ions to the STELLER in the reaction medium. The production of STELLER derivatives which emit light of various colors other than yellow was approached by substituting other acids for hydrochloric acid in the STELLER synthesis. Thermal stability was investigated by exposing STELLER to temperatures in the range from ambient to 167F for periods up to two months. Performance temperature range was determined by measuring the chemiluminescent performance of STELLER at temperatures from -40F to 125F. The effect of reactant purity was determined by synthesizing STELLER with reactants of various purities and measuring the variations in chemiluminescent performance.
