Study and Investigation of a Technique for Evaluating Surveillance Sensor Performance

Investigations and studies have been performed to determine the feasibility of a technique for evaluating the performance of surveillance mapping sensors. The case of the airborne mapping radar is specifically considered. The evaluation technique described is based on the use of the cross-correlation function between a replica of a controlled target array and the radar output film. The requirements for the target array are analyzed and a method for fabricating the required reference replicas is discussed. Methods for implementing the cross-correlation process are presented; the noncoherent optical correlator is suggested as the most feasible implementation. Conclusions supporting the feasibility of the technique are given followed by recommendations for further development of the evaluation technique.
