The effects of two intensity levels of constant illumination were studied with a chimpanzee held in a temperature and humidity controlled environmental chamber. The subject was exposed to each experimental light intensity (1.0 Lux and 85.0 Lux) for 14 consecutive days. Lever pressing behavior for appetitive reinforcement was measured, and the spontaneous frequency for the free-running work-rest rhythm was demonstrated for each of the experimental intensities of illumination. The results were interpreted as an exception to the Aschoff rule for light-active animals. A technique for adjusting daily performance scores to the subjective day of the subject was also discussed.
