THE ANALYSIS OF FATIGUE TEST RESULTS FOR BUTT WELDS WITH LACK OF PENETRATION DEFECTS USING A FRACTURE MECHANICS APPROACH

Published fatigue test results for butt welds, incorporat¬ing lack of penetration defects, have been analysed on a crack propagation basis. An approach based on linear fracture mechanics has been used and the pub-lished results agree with the theory. Proposals for using the theory in the form of curves linking allowable de¬fect size, material thickness, service stress and required endurance are made.
