摘要

The potential of continuous filament reinforced composites has been realized for many years as evidenced by the wide use of glass fiber reinforced thermosetting materials. Current efforts have been directed towards the development of filaments with high strength-to-weight ratios. These include the newer glass, boron, graphite, and related high modulus fibers. Matrix materials encompass an even broader field than fibers, and there is still much to be learned. Current work is along the lines of high temperature polymers for aerospace use. A review of the literature and patent sources did not reveal any commercially available, low cost filaments or composites which would exhibit better strength-to-weight ratios than the glass filament reinforced-thermoplastic composite which is proposed for submarine cable applications.
