A Review of Research on Flash Blindness.

The nature and cause of flash blindness are briefly discussed, and the most important data from both field tests and laboratory experiments are summarized. Data on time of recovery from effects of flash blindness are reviewed and presented as a function of total effective integrated energy in the flash, the size of the pupil, the state of adaptation prior to the flash, the size of the critical detail in the recovery target, the luminance of the target, the spectrum of the radiation, and individual variation in response. From a military operational point of view, this survey indicates that there is sufficient data on basic phenomena to proceed to research on possible countermeasure devices. (Author)
