One of the important aspects of the investigation of the heat balance of the oceans is the study of long-term fluctuations in its components. It has now proved possible to trace the secular variation of the heat content of the upper 100-metre layer of water, for example, in several regions in the North Atlantic, the distribution of which is shown in Fig.1.
