BATHYMETRIC AND SEDIMENT SURVEY OF THE TONGUE OF THE OCEAN, BAHAMAS. PART I. BATHYMETRY AND SEDIMENTS.

The bathymetric was made by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with the object of constructing preliminary bathymetric charts of areas off Big Wood Cay and High Cay by late January of 1961,and more complete bathymetric and sedimentary information later. Field work,which included echo sounding,sound velocity measurements,sediment sampling and bottom photography,was carried out during the latter part of November and during December of 1960by the Research Vessel BEAR on Cruise 258. Objectives of the survey may be listed in three categories: To produce reliable bathymetric contour charts of the entire TOTO,with particular emphasis on attaining a precision of plus or minus 2 fathoms in areas of especial importance to the U.S. Naval Underwater Ordnance Station. To determine the distribution of sediment types and other properties in the area of study,and to report our findings in a manner which seems most suitable. To obtain representative bottom photographs of the TOTO in order to learn something of the bottom roughness in the area,and to supplement sedimentary data obtained from study of the samples. (Author)
