PHOTOIONIZATION AND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS OF N2O,

Absolute photoionization and absorption coefficients of N2O gas have been measured in the 600to 1000A region with a 1-m Seya-Namioka type scanning vacuum ultraviolet monochromator. The Hopfield helium continuum was used as a background source with photoelectric detection of the dispersed light. A number of peaks were observed in both the absorption and photoionization spectra at wavelengths that agreed well with those of a higher resolution photographic spectrum. The total continuum underlying the band structure has been estimated,as well as that fraction due to ionization and to dissociation. Fluorescence was observed when the wavelength of the incident light was shorter than 960A. A region of weak emission with a broad maximum at about 860A was followed by a strong fluorescent edge at 756A. Fine structure superimposed on the weak emission was attributed to predissociation. Preionization was observed in Rydberg states and,for the first time,also in the dissociation continuum. Differences in the interaction of the ionization continuum with states and continua are discussed. (Author)
