The work described in this report is an attempt to use existing oil exploration technology to define the occurrence (depth), orientation (dip and strike), and relative structural competency of rock formations for construction purposes. This technology employs surface vibrators and sophisticated data acquisition and processing methods; it provides the capability of rapid areal coverage and could possibly provide guidance information on which preliminary facility site selection and exploratory boring programs could be based. The work reported here is a field test and interpretation to compare borehole and surface measurement data. Compressional wave and shear wave reflections and refractions were recorded at the South Salt Fork test site (T24N, R2E, Oklahoma). The objective was to use surface vibratory methods to measure parameters for rock layers in the first 1,000 feet below the surface that might, at some later time, be related to the structural competency of those rocks.
