A study was conducted to investigate an operator's target acquisition capability while viewing a television monitor. The study was conducted under realistically simulated flight conditions in the Guidance Development Center of the Orlando Division of Martin Marietta Corporation. Pilot performance, in terms of search, detection, and recognition, was assessed for both briefed and unbriefed missions. It was found that: Performance as a function of contrast is strongly dependent upon field-of-view and type of briefing; Probability of detection is influenced by field-of-view only in the unbriefed mode; Extensive target search requirements exist in briefed as well as unbriefed modes.
