A Limiting Condition for Supersonic Inviscid Interaction in the Corner of Intersecting Wedges

The flow structure in the corner of intersecting wedges of equal angle in inviscid supersonic flow is investigated based on the assumption that the attached bow waves of the wedges remain 'planar' up to their line of intersection. The flow structure is looked at from the intersection of the bow waves in toward the corner and found to consist of a succession of shock reflections required to eventually bring the flow in alignment with the intersection of the wedges. Calculations for several corner configurations show that, while the shock reflections initially move in toward the corner (physically possible), subsequent ones begin to move outward (physically impossible). It is concluded that the bow waves of the wedges cannot remain 'planar' up to their intersection, for finite wedge angles in inviscid supersonic flow, and therefore, a break must exist in the corner region of the bow waves which must then be joined by an intermediate shock configuration.
