A computational technique is developed which may be used to determine the temporal and spatial dependence of displacement, velocity and acceleration of a probe, which is interacting with sediment, in terms of boundary tractions which may be rate dependent or arbitrary functions of space. It is shown that such an analysis may be useful in determining the basic mechanical characteristics of a sediment when the response of a projectile is known, or inpredicting the response and loads on an object, such as a gravity corer, which is penetrating a sediment having known mechanical properties. Numerical results are specialized to a large gravity corer having a circular cylindrical core barrel. (Author)
