An investigation was conducted to define the water-reactive characteristics of petroleum fuels following several reported problems resulting from fuel-water interaction. Samples of petroleum fuels, both commercial and specification grade, were evaluated for water-reactivity using selected test procedures. Additional studies were performed with the WSIM procedure (Fed. Test Method Std. No. 3256.1) to define the effects of hydrocarbon composition on WSIM index ratings. In addition, the evaluating of fuel samples necessitated the modification of the WSIM method to permit a realistic assessment of their water-reactive properties. Of all samples evaluated, diesel fuels as a class exhibited the greatest degree of water-reactivity. (Author)
