Computer Reduction of Data from Engineering Tests on Soils and Ocean Sediments

Because of the tremendous quantity of data generated from tests of ocean floor soils, NCEL has utilized the IBM 1620-11 computer to aid in data reduction. Thirteen programs were written in FORTRAN to reduce the data and to aid in the analysis of the test results. The use of these programs and associated computer techniques affords the benefits of convenience, economy, accuracy, and speed in data reduction. This procedure has also reduced the efforts required in preparing the results in a form suitable for publication. In addition, further analysis of the test results is facilitated by the fact that the results are already catalogued on cards. (Author)
