Pulse Height Analyzers: Computer-Compatible Output for Both Stationary and Mobile Systems

As the utilization of digital computer techniques for the analysis of pulse height spectra increases, it is important to develop efficient and reliable techniques for linking the pulse height analyzer to the computer. Two computer-compatible analyzer output media, punched cards and magnetic tape, were found to be practical and appropriate for providing computer coupling for an array of pulse height spectrometers which are used for making high-quality measurements in gamma-ray spectrometry. Both stationary and mobile installations were accommodated. An IBM-523 Gang Summary Punch, in conjunction with a specially built buffer unit, is used to provide fast punched card readout from 256-, 1024-, and 16,384-channel pulse height analyzers. Computer-compatible magnetic tape readout is provided on a 4,096-channel and a 16,384-channel pulse height analyzer. (Author)
