摘要

The Plasma Display is a new digital storage device. The development of the Display was motivated by the anticipated needs of the PLATO, a computer controlled teaching system at the laboratory. The PLATO system utilizes a high speed digital computer as a control element for teaching a number of students simultaneously. In the experimental system at the laboratory, each student is provided with an electronic key set as a means of communication with the central computer (CDC 1604) and a television screen for presenting him the information selected by the computer. In theory, a large number of student terminals, located at various places, may be connected to a central computing facility and many different courses may be taught simultaneously. However, the high cost of TV storage tubes for every terminal and the video transmission lines necessary for such a system prohibits its practice outside the research laboratory. (Author)
