Low Latitude Electron Content and Ionospheric Height from a Hybrid Faraday-Doppler Program

Dispersive doppler and faraday rotation data from 79 passes of 1961 Omicron 1 and 1961 Alpha-Eta 1 recorded at Johnston Island between 17 May and 15 Jul 62 were reduced, primarily by an improved faraday-doppler technique, to obtain electron content and effective ionospheric height data. Significant results obtained were: mean maximum low-latitude content, (3.5 plus or minus 0.5) x 10 to the 17th power electrons/sq meter; early post-sunrise rate of production (2.3 plus or minus 0.3) x 10 to the 13th power electrons/sq meter/sec; or, for an equivalent maximum electron density (1.4 plus or minus 0.3) x 10 to the 12th power electrons/cu meter, and (6.4 plus or minus 12) x 10 to the 7th power electrons/cu meter/sec. The mean effective ionospheric height was 378 plus or minus 23 km. A description of the improved, hybrid faraday-doppler technique is included. (Author)
