Evaluation of the Fusion Casting Process for Ceramic Materials

An evaluation of the fusion casting process for structural ceramic materials was conducted. The investigation into the improvement of structural soundness in castings of high alumina compositions included a study of furnace and mold design, melt conditions, chemical additions, vibrational casting, and heat extraction. Evaluation was made by microscopic observations, mechanical damping capacity measurements, and strength testing. A torsional technique for observing microcreep was developed to give information on the thermo-mechanical behavior of the castings. (Author)
