摘要

Perphaps one of the strangest deserts to be found anywhere is the Rajasthan Desert of northwest India, also known as the Rajputana or Thar Desert. If the desert was once habitable land, the question arises as to what contributed to its deterioration and whether there are any possibilities of reverting back to its habitable state. Since vertical motions resulting from other effects are additive (in this model) to results from heating, other questions also considered in this paper are those related to the effects of the Himalayas, such as the vertical velocities resulting from upslope and downslope motions caused by winds blowing against the Himalayas. Effects of nearby mountains on forced interior circulations are also included in this paper by taking solutions for cases with mountains and comparing them with solutions for cases without the mountains. In order to determine how a land mass like the Himalayas affects the large-scale vertical motions set up by forces, especially those produced by heating, some of the features of the point 'forces,' or singularities in the forcing function, are examined.
