A Versatile, Large-Memory Pulse-Height Analyzer for gamma-Ray Spectrometry

A 16,384-channel pulse-height analyzer was designed and built to achieve maximum benefit from any of several special detection systems. Although the analyzer was intended primarily for coincidence gamma-ray spectrometry, broader usage potentialities were recognized so that, in the design, features were included which make this instrument useful for a variety of measurements in radiochemical and nuclear physics research. Some important features are: It can be used for the collection of either single- or two-parameter spectra, and provides for a wide selection of channel resolution in both applications; in collection of singles spectra, a series of spectra can be collected in rapid sequence, and each spectrum held in the memory until the entire series has been collected; a 16-position programmer makes it possible to specify a measurement sequence and to have it proceed automatically; an identifying block of words can be composed and optionally inserted directly into the analyzer memory; all or selected portions of the data can be inspected directly and easily; internal registers can be used for the selection of specific channels for display or for the summation of counts; punched-card and magnetic tape output options are available.
