Splat Quenching of Iron-Nickel-Boron Alloys

Fe-Ni-B alloys were investigated by x-ray diffraction after splat quenching. Although this rapid cooling did not produce a measurable supersaturation of dissolved boron in either binary Fe-B or Ni-B alloys, a marked increase in dissolved boron was achieved by the splat quenching of ternary Fe-Ni-B alloys. Boron additions up to 2.0 w/o to Fe-13Ni and Fe-24Ni alloys cause an increase in retained austenite from 0 to 59% and 92%, respectively. The martensitic phase in the Fe-13Ni-9 a/o B alloy is found to contain about 0.6 a/o interstitial boron, as evidenced by the tetragonality of this phase, and about 3.6 a/o substitutional boron, as deduced from the lattice parameter decrease, the balance of the boron being precipitated as (Fe, Ni)3B. The austenitic Fe-Ni-B phases also contain both interstitial and substitutional boron. (Author)
