Research on the Oxidation of Hydrocarbons in the USSR During the Last Fifty Years

The developments during the last 50 years in the field of hydrocarbon oxidation by molecular oxygen are summarized. The contributions of Soviet scientists such as N. N. Semenov are discussed. The efforts of these scientists have produced important theoretical and experimental data on the mechanisms of oxidation and have led to the development of promising technological processes.
