Improving the Performance of Electroluminescent Lamps at Elevated Temperatures

The report provides a performance characterization of electroluminescent lamps with regard to temperature. Performance of typical state-of-the-art constructions are compared to special el lamps using experimentally modified phosphors developed through this program. A method for encapsulation of individual phosphor particles by coating their surfaces with refractory oxide materials in a fluidized bed reactor is described. The effect of operation at various temperatures--from-50C to +100C--on brightness, current, power, and spectral emission is described for el lamps using coated and uncoated zinc sulphide and zinc sulphoselenide phosphors. Improvement in operating life is reported for titanium dioxide coated zinc sulphoselenide EL phosphor. (Author)
