The effects of defect structure and doping of potassium chlorate on its chemical reactivity with respect to its propagative reactions with sulfur was investigated. The preparation of doped single crystals of potassium chlorate was continued during the entire program. The crops of single crystals were analyzed for their dopant contents. The influence of doping on the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate was investigated by dta and tga. The effect of Potassium chloride and perchlorate as an intermediate reaction product on the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate was studied. These experiments are necessary for establishing the basis for evaluating the reactivity of potassium chlorate with sulfur. Electrical conductivity studies were initiated to correlate electronic defect structure with the reactivity behavior of potassium chlorate. Low temperature isothermal investigations were conducted to evaluate possible reaction mechanisms. The effect of irradiation and mechanical shock on the decomposition of potassium chlorate was probed. The combustion reaction of mixtures of sulfur with doped potassium chlorate and of mixtures with selected metal oxides was investigated. (Author)
